Tech Industry Again 'Missing The Point' of Sci Fi Warnings

Saw this article in The Independent this morning. Good grief, the Black Mirror episode was meant to be a warning to society, not to be seen as a business opportunity! What is it with the tech industry? When they see a dystopian future that is so often portrayed in sci-fi films and novels, they appear to miss the point that these futures are meant as warnings, and seemingly rush headlong into trying to re-create it, in this particular instance with genAI slop. Wouldn't it be nice if just one tech company tried to create something for the good of humanity? Perhaps they lack the imagination, the creativity, the humanity to develop something for the good for everyone, or more likely they see no profit in doing so? Most seem to create products that seemingly increase feelings of loneliness, that surveil and divide us, lessen our ability to think critically, reduce our attention spans and keep us addicted.

Surprise, surprise, they also want to get into education too - "2wai has other uses, too. It allows users to interact with AI versions of historical figures like William Shakespeare, Florence Nightingale, King Henry VIII and Frida Kahlo, who are intended to serve as “real-time teaching assistants for a truly immersive learning experience”. 🤦‍♂️
